Illuminated Miniatures Workshop

June 10-16

Award-winning artist Ann Marie Campbell has studied painting from the age of 10, and achieved a BA in the School of Fine Art from UCLA. Her work can be seen at www.annmariecampbell.com

Intrigued by ancient art methods, Ann studied those techniques and brings you a workshop on Illuminated Miniatures. Please join her as she explains and teaches a workshop in Egg Tempera Illuminated Miniatures.

Catholic monks of the Middle Ages rendered their sacred Illuminated images on the same prepared animal skins, and used the same pigments, egg tempera binder and gold that we will use.

Working with these traditional materials (goatskin parchment, 23 k beaten gold leaf, precious powdered pigments from the Earth, and egg tempera), each participant will paint their own Illuminated Miniature. The student will learn to make the egg tempera, prepare the skin to accept the paint, will transfer an existing drawing of a Miniature, gild or “illuminate” part of the pattern, and will learn how to use the ancient medium of egg tempera, just as medieval monks did, thereby continuing the tradition of “painted theology” as it was practiced a millennial ago.

The process is both patient and contemplative; Ann provides authentic background music of medieval chant and instrumentals.

All materials are provided but you can bring favorite brushes, a painting smock, pens/pencils/notebook, and camera. Total cost is $695 for room and board, stipend and materials.
